Many people assume that the postal system began in the 19th century with the invention of the postage stamp, but in fact, organized mail delivery dates back much further. For example, the ancient Persians had a relay system of mounted messengers around 550 BC. Later, the Roman Empire developed a more sophisticated network called the cursus publicus, which was used mainly for official government communications. However, this system was not available to ordinary citizens. It wasn't until the 16th century that private mail services emerged in Europe, allowing merchants and the general public to send letters for a fee.
