Good morning. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. As you know, bicycles have been around for over two centuries. The first verifiable bicycle, called the 'Draisine' or 'hobby horse', was invented by Karl von Drais in 1817. It had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground to move. In the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, leading to the 'penny-farthing' with its huge front wheel. However, it was not until the 1880s that the 'safety bicycle' with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive became popular, making cycling much safer and more accessible to the general public.
