Today, in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing the impact of urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that adding more parks and community gardens can reduce the local temperature by up to four degrees Celsius during heatwaves. Interestingly, the effect is strongest when these spaces are connected, forming green corridors rather than isolated patches. The study also noted that while trees provide shade, the cooling effect is more significant when combined with water features like ponds or fountains. However, the researchers emphasized that maintenance is crucial, as poorly kept green areas can actually increase heat absorption due to dry soil and sparse vegetation.
