The first two-wheeled vehicle, called a draisine, was invented in 1817 by a German baron. It had no pedals, and riders had to push their feet against the ground to move forward. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'boneshaker'. However, it wasn't until the 1880s, with the invention of the chain drive and pneumatic tires, that bicycles became safe and comfortable for everyday use.
