Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban heat islands. Cities tend to be warmer than surrounding rural areas because concrete and asphalt absorb and re-emit heat. One surprising factor is that parks and green spaces can significantly reduce local temperatures, sometimes by up to 4 degrees Celsius. However, the effect is limited to a small radius around the green area. Therefore, city planners should distribute small parks throughout neighborhoods rather than relying on one large central park. Additionally, using light-colored materials for roofs and pavements can reflect more sunlight and further mitigate the heat.
