Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. Recent studies show that city parks not only improve air quality but also significantly reduce stress levels among residents. However, the key finding is that the distribution of these spaces is uneven. Wealthier neighborhoods often have more trees and larger parks, while lower-income areas may lack even basic playgrounds. This disparity affects public health outcomes. A city initiative in Melbourne, for example, aimed to plant 70,000 trees by 2020, but it prioritized areas with existing high canopy cover, missing the opportunity to address inequality. Therefore, planners must consider social factors when designing green infrastructure.
