Now, many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but in fact, the first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'velocipede', appeared in France in the 1790s. It had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'boneshaker'. However, it was not until the 1880s that the chain-driven 'safety bicycle' was introduced, which had two equal-sized wheels and is the direct ancestor of modern bicycles. This design became popular because it was much safer than the earlier high-wheel versions.
