Today, in our environmental science lecture, we are discussing urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that parks with diverse native plants attract more bird species than those with non-native ornamental plants. However, the researchers noted that the size of the park mattered less than the variety of vegetation. Interestingly, they also discovered that the presence of small ponds significantly increased insect diversity, which in turn supported more birds. The study suggests that city planners should prioritize planting local species and creating water features, even in small parks, to enhance biodiversity.
