It had no pedals; riders pushed themselves along with their feet. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the velocipede. However, it was very uncomfortable due to its rigid frame and wooden wheels. In the 1880s, the safety bicycle appeared, featuring a chain drive and equal-sized wheels, which made riding much safer and more practical. This design eventually became the standard for modern bicycles.
