Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. Recent studies show that city parks can reduce local temperatures by up to 3 degrees Celsius, thanks to tree shade and evapotranspiration. However, the benefits depend on park design. For instance, large, continuous lawns with scattered trees are less effective than dense, layered vegetation. Also, parks with water features, like ponds or fountains, can enhance cooling, but they require significant maintenance. Interestingly, small pocket parks, if well-shaded, can cool their immediate surroundings effectively, but their impact on the whole city is limited. So, when planning new green areas, we must consider both local and city-wide effects.
