A recent study in Manchester found that increasing tree coverage by 10% could reduce surface temperatures by up to 2.5 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the researchers noted that the effect varies depending on tree species and local wind patterns. They also emphasized that green roofs, while beneficial for insulation, have a smaller cooling effect on street level compared to parks. Interestingly, the study suggested that small, scattered green areas are more effective for cooling than one large park, because they allow better air circulation. This finding challenges previous assumptions in urban planning.
