Now, many people assume that the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but in fact, a form of two-wheeled vehicle appeared as early as 1790 in France. However, it had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground. The first pedal-driven bicycle was developed in Scotland in 1839 by a blacksmith named Kirkpatrick Macmillan. Interestingly, his invention was not widely adopted at the time. It wasn't until the 1860s, in Paris, that pedals were attached to the front wheel, leading to the 'boneshaker'. This design was uncomfortable, so later improvements included rubber tires and a chain drive.
