However, it wasn't until the 1880s that the modern chain-driven bicycle was developed in England. This design quickly became popular, and by the early 1900s, bicycles were a common means of transport. Interestingly, the invention of the pneumatic tire in 1888 by John Boyd Dunlop significantly improved riding comfort, which led to a boom in cycling as a leisure activity.
