In today's lecture, we'll discuss the history of the post-it note. It was invented in 1968 by Dr. Spencer Silver, a chemist at 3M, who was actually trying to create a super-strong adhesive. Instead, he accidentally developed a very weak, pressure-sensitive adhesive that could be reused. For years, no one found a use for it. Then in 1974, another 3M scientist, Art Fry, who sang in a church choir, was frustrated that his bookmarks kept falling out of his hymn book. He remembered Silver's adhesive and used it to coat his bookmarks, which stayed in place but could be removed without damage. The product was launched in 1980 and became hugely successful.
