A recent study in Melbourne found that parks and community gardens can reduce the local temperature by up to 3 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the researchers noted that the cooling effect is strongest when green spaces are connected, forming a network, rather than isolated patches. Additionally, they observed that trees with broad leaves, such as plane trees, provided more shade than conifers. The study also highlighted that residents living within 500 meters of a green space reported better mental health, but the effect diminished for those living further away. So, in urban planning, connectivity is key.
