Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that increasing tree cover by just 10% can reduce local temperatures by up to 2.3 degrees Celsius during summer. However, this effect is strongest when trees are planted near buildings, not just along streets. The study also highlighted that parks with a mix of native and non-native species attract more bird diversity, but native trees require 30% less water. Interestingly, the researchers noted that while residents preferred large lawns for recreation, these areas contributed least to cooling, compared to shaded walkways or community gardens.
