Good morning. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but in fact, the first two-wheeled vehicle, called a draisine, appeared in 1817 in Germany. However, it had no pedals. The pedal-powered bicycle we recognize today was developed in the 1860s in France. Interestingly, the first bicycle race was held in 1868 in Paris, and it covered a distance of just 1.2 kilometers. So, although bicycles seem modern, their basic design is over 150 years old.
