Professor: Today we're discussing the impact of urbanization on local wildlife. One key finding is that some bird species, like the peregrine falcon, have adapted remarkably well to city life. They nest on tall buildings, which mimic cliff faces, and their diet now includes urban pigeons. However, not all species thrive. Ground-nesting birds, such as skylarks, have declined sharply because parks and green spaces are often too managed and lack the tall grass they need for shelter. Interestingly, a recent study in London showed that providing small, unmanaged patches of wildflower meadows in city parks increased skylark numbers by 20% within two years.
