Good morning. Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban heat islands. You might think that cities are warmer because of cars and factories, but actually, the main cause is the materials we use for buildings and roads. Concrete and asphalt absorb and store heat during the day, then release it at night. This makes cities several degrees hotter than surrounding rural areas. Interestingly, parks and green spaces can reduce this effect. Trees provide shade and release moisture through their leaves, which cools the air. So, when planning new developments, architects should prioritize green roofs and street trees. However, these solutions are most effective when applied on a large scale, not just in isolated pockets.
