Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that adding more parks and trees can reduce the city's temperature by up to 4 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. This cooling effect is mainly due to shade and evapotranspiration. However, the study also noted that the benefits are strongest when green spaces are evenly distributed, rather than concentrated in a few wealthy areas. Interestingly, the researchers emphasized that even small community gardens can have a significant impact, but they need to be maintained properly to ensure long-term effectiveness.
