Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, but this design was very unstable. The so-called 'penny-farthing' with a large front wheel appeared in the 1870s, which allowed greater speed but was dangerous. It wasn't until the 1880s that the 'safety bicycle' with a chain drive and two equal-sized wheels became popular, making cycling accessible to more people, especially women.
