Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but in fact, early prototypes appeared in the 18th century. The first known example, called the 'celerifere', was created in France around 1790. It had no pedals or steering, and riders simply pushed their feet along the ground. Later, in 1817, a German inventor added a steering mechanism, but still no pedals. It wasn't until the 1860s that pedals were attached to the front wheel, leading to the 'boneshaker'. So, the key point is that the addition of pedals came much later than the initial invention.
