Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban green spaces on local climate. Recent studies show that parks can reduce surrounding temperatures by up to 5 degrees Celsius during heatwaves, mainly through shade and evapotranspiration. However, the effect depends on the size and density of vegetation. A single large park has a greater cooling radius than several small ones, but small gardens scattered across a city can lower the average temperature more evenly. Additionally, trees with broad leaves are more effective than those with needle-like leaves in urban settings. So, while planning new green areas, city officials should prioritize connected networks rather than isolated patches.
