Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. The first bicycle, invented in the early 19th century, had no pedals and was pushed along by the rider's feet. It was called a 'velocipede'. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, but the ride was very bumpy. Then, in 1885, the 'safety bicycle' was introduced, which had a chain drive to the rear wheel, making it much safer and more comfortable. Interestingly, the rise of the safety bicycle also led to changes in women's fashion, as it allowed women to ride more easily in their daily clothing.
