Before that, the recipient paid for the postage, which often led to refusal or delays. The first official stamp, the Penny Black, was issued in Britain in 1840. Interestingly, its design was based on a profile of Queen Victoria, and it remained valid for postage for many years. However, the stamp was printed in black, which made it easy to cancel but difficult to see the cancellation mark over the dark ink. Therefore, later stamps were issued in different colors to improve visibility of the postmark.
