Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing the impact of urban development on local wildlife. A recent study in Melbourne tracked the behavior of possums in suburban areas. Interestingly, researchers found that possums are adapting to city life by changing their diets. Instead of relying solely on native leaves, they now consume a significant amount of garden plants and even human food scraps. However, this dietary shift has led to health issues, particularly dental problems, due to high sugar content. The study suggests that while urban possums are surviving, their long-term health is at risk. Therefore, city planners should consider preserving green corridors to encourage natural feeding habits.
