In today's lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban green spaces on mental health. A recent study conducted in Melbourne followed 1,200 residents over five years. Participants who lived within 300 meters of a park reported 22% lower levels of stress, even after controlling for income and lifestyle. Interestingly, the benefit was stronger for older adults, particularly those over 65. However, the study found no significant effect on physical activity levels. Instead, the researchers suggest that the calming visual environment and social interaction opportunities are key factors. So, while we often assume parks promote exercise, their main psychological benefit may come from passive enjoyment.
