Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle, focusing on its impact on society. The first practical bicycle was invented in the early 19th century, but it wasn't until the 1880s that the 'safety bicycle' became popular. This design had equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, making it much safer and easier to ride than earlier models with huge front wheels. Interestingly, the bicycle played a crucial role in the women's suffrage movement, as it gave women greater mobility and independence. By the 1890s, cycling had become a widespread leisure activity, especially among the middle class, and it also led to improvements in road conditions.
