Today, in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing the impact of urban green spaces. Recent studies show that parks and community gardens can reduce local temperatures by up to five degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the key finding is not just about cooling. Researchers at the University of Melbourne found that access to these spaces significantly improves mental health, particularly in children. Interestingly, the size of the green area matters less than its proximity to residents. A small garden within 200 meters of homes has a greater effect than a large park located kilometers away. So, urban planners should prioritize creating small, accessible green pockets rather than large, distant ones.
