As sea levels rise, many coastal communities face increased flooding and land loss. However, one often overlooked factor is the role of vegetation. Mangrove forests, for instance, act as natural barriers, reducing wave energy by up to 66%. In contrast, areas without such vegetation experience erosion rates three times higher. This is particularly evident in the Gulf of Mexico, where recent studies show that restoring mangrove habitats could save billions in property damage. So, while hard engineering like sea walls is common, nature-based solutions are proving more sustainable and cost-effective in the long run.
