One key study from the University of Melbourne found that while some species struggle, others adapt surprisingly well. For example, the common brushtail possum has thrived in Australian cities by shifting its diet to include garden plants and even human food scraps. However, the study also noted a concerning trend: the number of native bird species in urban areas has declined by nearly 30% over the past two decades, mainly due to predation by domestic cats and loss of nesting sites. The researchers suggest that creating green corridors could help mitigate this decline.
