Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that increasing tree canopy cover by 10% can reduce local temperatures by up to 2.5 degrees Celsius during summer heatwaves. However, the researchers emphasized that the placement of trees is more critical than the total number. For instance, trees planted along streets facing the afternoon sun provided the greatest cooling effect. Additionally, they noted that parks with a mix of native grasses and shrubs supported more bird species than those with only lawns. Surprisingly, the study also showed that small, scattered green areas were more effective at improving residents' mental well-being than one large central park.
