Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban heat islands. These are areas in cities that are significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas. The main cause is the replacement of natural surfaces with concrete and asphalt, which absorb and retain heat. Additionally, tall buildings block wind and trap heat, while air conditioning units release hot air. One effective solution is planting more trees, as they provide shade and release moisture. Another is using reflective materials on rooftops, which can lower temperatures by several degrees. Interestingly, studies show that even small parks can reduce local temperatures by up to 2 degrees Celsius.
