Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne compared two types of parks: large central parks and small neighborhood gardens. The research found that while large parks support more bird species, small gardens are crucial for insect pollination, especially bees. Interestingly, the study showed that the distance between green spaces matters more than their size. If parks are within 300 meters of each other, species can move freely, creating a network. However, when gaps exceed 500 meters, some species, like certain butterflies, fail to disperse. So, for city planners, the key is not just creating more parks, but ensuring they are connected.
