Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. You might be surprised to learn that the first bicycles, invented in the early 19th century, had no pedals. Riders pushed their feet against the ground to move forward. It wasn't until the 1860s that pedals were added to the front wheel. However, these early bikes had a major problem: they were very unstable. To solve this, inventors later designed the 'penny-farthing' with a huge front wheel, which allowed greater speed but was dangerous to mount and dismount. Finally, in the 1880s, the 'safety bicycle' with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive became popular, leading to the modern design we know today.
