Today, in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing urban green spaces. Recent studies show that parks and community gardens can reduce city temperatures by up to 3 degrees Celsius. However, the key factor isn't the total area of green space, but its distribution. For example, small, scattered gardens are more effective than one large park because they provide cooling shade across residential areas. Additionally, trees with broad leaves, like oaks, offer better cooling than narrow-leafed species. So, when planning new developments, city planners should prioritize creating multiple small green pockets, especially near housing blocks.
