Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban heat islands. Cities tend to be warmer than surrounding rural areas because concrete and asphalt absorb and re-emit heat. One solution is to plant more trees, which provide shade and release moisture through transpiration. Another approach is using reflective materials on rooftops, known as cool roofs, which can lower surface temperatures by up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. However, a recent study found that the most effective strategy combines green spaces with cool pavements, reducing city-wide temperatures by an average of 3.5 degrees Celsius. This hybrid approach also helps manage stormwater runoff, a co-benefit that simple roof solutions lack.
