Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to discuss the history of the postal service in Britain. Before the nineteenth century, mail delivery was slow and unreliable. In 1840, the first postage stamp, the Penny Black, was introduced. This made sending letters much cheaper and more efficient. However, the stamp itself was not the only innovation. The introduction of the pillar box, or public mailbox, in 1852, allowed people to post letters at any time, not just when the post office was open. This greatly improved the convenience of the service. So, while the stamp reduced the cost, the pillar box increased accessibility.
