Today we're going to look at the history of the bicycle. Now, many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but actually, early versions appeared in the late 18th century. The first two-wheeled, pedal-less device, called a 'velocipede', was made in 1817 by a German inventor. However, it had no pedals and was pushed along by the rider's feet. It wasn't until 1860s in France that pedals were added to the front wheel. Interestingly, the modern chain-driven bicycle, similar to what we ride today, didn't appear until the 1880s in England. So, the design evolved gradually over several decades.
