Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to look at the history of the bicycle. Now, many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, and that's partly true. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'velocipede', appeared in France in the 1860s. However, it was very heavy and difficult to ride. Later, in the 1880s, the 'safety bicycle' was developed in England, with a chain drive and equal-sized wheels. This design became popular because it was safer and faster. Interestingly, the pneumatic tire, which we still use today, was added in 1888 by a Scottish veterinarian named John Boyd Dunlop. He originally designed it to make his son's tricycle more comfortable. So, the bicycle as we know it really came together over several decades.
