Now, many people believe that the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but in fact, the first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'velocipede', appeared in France in the 1790s. However, it had no pedals and riders had to push their feet along the ground. It wasn't until 1865 that pedals were added to the front wheel by a French blacksmith named Pierre Michaux. Interestingly, the first bicycles were made entirely of wood, which made them very heavy and difficult to ride, especially on rough roads. Later, in the 1870s, metal frames became common, making bicycles lighter and more practical.
