Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss how urban beekeeping impacts local ecosystems. A recent study in London found that honeybees in city centers actually collect more diverse pollen than those in rural areas, because cities offer a wider variety of flowering plants across different seasons. However, this diversity can also lead to competition with native wild bees for limited floral resources. The research suggests that while urban hives boost pollination for community gardens, they may reduce wild bee populations within a 300-meter radius. Therefore, city planners should consider spacing hives at least 500 meters apart to minimize negative effects.
