Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that parks can reduce local temperatures by up to four degrees Celsius during heatwaves. This is because trees provide shade and release moisture through transpiration. However, the researchers noted that the cooling effect is strongest within 100 meters of the park boundary. Beyond that distance, the benefit decreases significantly. They also observed that larger parks with dense tree canopies are more effective than small grassy areas. Interestingly, the study highlighted that city planners often overlook the importance of connecting green spaces through tree-lined streets, which could extend the cooling effect into residential areas.
