It wasn't until 1860s that pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'boneshaker'. This design was uncomfortable and difficult to ride. Later, the 'penny-farthing' with a large front wheel became popular in the 1870s, but it was dangerous. Finally, in 1885, the 'safety bicycle' was introduced, which had two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, making it much safer and more practical. This design is the basis for modern bicycles.
