Today we're going to look at the history of the bicycle. The first pedal-powered bicycle was invented in Scotland in 1839 by Kirkpatrick MacMillan, but it was not very popular because it was heavy and difficult to ride. In 1860s, the French introduced the 'boneshaker', which had wooden wheels and iron tires, making rides very bumpy. Then in the 1870s, the 'penny-farthing' became fashionable, with a huge front wheel and a small rear wheel. However, it was dangerous due to its height. Finally, in 1885, the 'safety bicycle' with equal-sized wheels and a chain drive was developed, which is the basis for modern bikes.
