Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, and that's partly true. However, the first two-wheeled vehicle, called a hobby horse, appeared in 1817, invented by a German baron. It had no pedals; riders pushed their feet along the ground. Then, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel in France. This design was improved over the years, but it wasn't until the 1880s that the chain drive and equal-sized wheels made the bicycle safe and practical. So, while the basic concept is older, the modern bicycle as we know it really emerged in the late 1800s.
