Now, you might think that the first bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but in fact, a two-wheeled vehicle was sketched by Leonardo da Vinci in the 15th century. However, it was never built. The first practical bicycle, called the 'draisine' or 'running machine', appeared in 1817, invented by a German baron, Karl von Drais. It had no pedals, and riders pushed themselves along with their feet. It wasn't until the 1860s in France that pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'velocipede'. This design was popular but very uncomfortable due to its rigid frame and wooden wheels. Later, in the 1880s, the 'safety bicycle' with a chain drive and equal-sized wheels became the standard, which is similar to the bicycles we use today.
