Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. The first true bicycle, called the 'draisine', was invented in 1817 by a German baron. It had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground. In the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'velocipede'. However, it was very uncomfortable due to its solid tires and rigid frame. The major breakthrough came in 1885 when John Kemp Starley designed the 'safety bicycle' with a chain drive and two equal-sized wheels. This design became the basis for modern bicycles. Interestingly, the pneumatic tire, invented by John Boyd Dunlop in 1888, was initially developed to make his son's tricycle more comfortable, but it soon revolutionized bicycle travel.
