Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne compared two types of parks: large central parks and small neighborhood gardens. Researchers found that small gardens, though less visited, actually support a higher diversity of bird species per square meter. This is because they provide varied microhabitats and are often connected by tree-lined streets, which act as corridors. However, the study also noted that central parks are crucial for larger mammals and for recreational activities. Therefore, the conclusion is not to prioritize one over the other, but to plan a network that integrates both sizes effectively.
