Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that increasing tree coverage by just 10% can reduce local temperatures by up to 2 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the study also noted that the benefits are not evenly distributed. Wealthier neighborhoods tend to have more mature trees, while poorer areas often lack sufficient green cover. To address this, the city council has proposed a new policy: planting at least 500 trees annually in underprivileged districts. But funding remains a challenge, so they are seeking partnerships with private companies.
